This course empowers students to take control of their learning experiences by discovering their own voices and interests so that they become active and productive members of academic communities.
The theoretical components of the course nurture an exploration of selfhood through personal narrative and dialogue, an inquiry into individual learning needs and preferences, and an ability to reflect on the views of others critically.
At practical levels, the course enables students to increase their awareness of campus resources and develop an understanding of navigating educational environments effectively.
International students in particular will learn about Canadian educational perspectives and essential cultural navigational tools. Ultimately, students will emerge with valuable academic and professional skills that foster lifelong development and learning.

UNBC EDUC 101 (3)
Education 101 uses a student-centred approach to help learners discover how they learn best. Drawing on Indigenous perspectives, reflective practice, storytelling, collaboration, and experiential learning, students build greater self-awareness and confidence. Rather than simply focusing on course content, students explore strategies that strengthen critical thinking, communication, and personal growth. The goal is simple: to help each student find their own voice and become a more effective learner in college and beyond.
Education 101 provides a strong foundation for academic, professional, and personal success. The course develops transferable skills that are valued across a wide range of careers, including communication, self-reflection, teamwork, problem-solving, leadership, and lifelong learning. Whether students plan to pursue education, business, healthcare, social services, or another field, the ability to learn effectively and adapt to new challenges remains one of the most important skills for future success.
Instead of traditional midterm and final exams, Education 101 emphasizes continuous growth through a comprehensive course pack that serves as a learning journal throughout the 14-week semester. Students engage in weekly reflections, activities, and guided exercises that connect course concepts to their own experiences. The course pack is reviewed regularly through individual instructor feedback and one-on-one conversations, creating a supportive learning environment that encourages meaningful progress, self-discovery, and personal academic development.
